#1
BLACK TEENS: ANOTHER IMAGE, is
a series of 16x20 black and white silver gelatin prints, accompanied by text.
In 1987, 32 African American teenagers living throughout
the Bay Area were photographed and interviewed by photographer and social
activist, H. Lenn Keller about issues that were affecting their lives.

Issue #2
GENDER WARRIORS,
is a work in progress by photographer and social activist, H. Lenn Keller,
that is
looking at the cross-sections of race and gender identity. It is interrogating
gender
identity as a site
of oppression, and examining it as a social construction and
a performance,
based on a
male-female
sexual
binary,
and
it's accompanying rigid gender roles within a patriarchal system. It
is also looking at how gender has been racialized.
This work
poses the questions; who determines what is appropriate
gender
presentation,
what makes them appropriate, why is it necessary to conform to these prescribed
presentations, who and what do these "appropriate" gender presentations
serve, and why do those
who
do
not conform
become
targets
for
discrimination and violence.
